This educational activity is a comprehensive overview of aspects of care for the resident experiencing dementia. It will assist the participant in identifying common behaviors seen in this population and explore underlying causes. The educational activity will also explore how to promote a therapeutic environment and support self-care. The learner will explore issues specific to caregivers and families, to include grief, stress, and ethical conflicts. The learner will be able to identify reasons for the development of combative or aggressive behaviors and describe interventions and medications used to help manage these behaviors.
